Walking With Bastet
Now if you've read my about me, you'll know my journey started in Edinburgh with Scottish Paganism, so when I first felt Bastet's presence in my practice, it came as a bit of a shock! But once that wore off comfort crept in. Known to many as the Egyptian Goddess of Cats, Home, Protection & Joy... let me tell you, she is far more complex than the simplified image of a playful feline deity. Ironically when I first felt her presence I was volunteering at a local cat rescue! In my journey Bastet has shown herself as both fiercely protective & deeply nurturing, guiding me through lessons of balance, boundaries & self sovereignty.
My first encounters with Bastet weren't dramatic. The came in whispers - dreams filled with sleek black cats, a stray black cat turning up on my doorstep, I adopted him of course & a pull towards Egyptian symbolism. A sense of watchfulness when I felt vulnerable. Over time, I realised these weren't coincidences. They were invitations. Bastet wasn't demanding; she was waiting, patient & poised, much like a cat who watches you until your ready to notice them.
Working with Bastet has taught me that devotion doesn't need to be complicated. She appreciates offerings of incense (especially frankincense & Myrhh), music, gentle candles & acts of care towards cats or animals in need. In ritual, she asks me to stand in my power, to honour my home as a sacred space & to protect what's mine - my energy, my boundaries, my heart.
I've also learned that Bastet is a goddess of joy, reminding me that pleasure & laughter are not luxuries but spiritual necessities. When life becomes heavy, she nudges me toward lightness; dancing, listening to music, or basking in a sunbeam with the contentment of a cat.
The most profound lesson Bastet has given me is the power of duality. She embodies both gentleness and ferocity. She teaches me that I can be soft without being weak & strong without being cruel. Protection & love can exist in the same breath.
If you feel drawn to Bastet, my advice is simple: start with respect. Learn her history, honour her with sincerity & listen more than you speak. Leave her offerings, care for your home & animals & allow her to reveal herself in her own time. She doesn't demand blind devotion - she asks for authenticity & balance.
Walking with Bastet in my witchcraft has been a journey of empowerment, joy & deepened self-respect. She has sharpened my intuition, reminded me to protect my sacred space & encouraged me to embrace both the fierce & tender sides of myself.
To walk with Bastet is to learn the art of grace, paired with claws, laughter paired with vigilance. For me, that balance has been nothing short of transformative.
